“We’re not rewriting history. We’re discovering the stories that weren’t recorded.”
Julian Arahanga, Director
In the second season of this epic series for Māori Television, the stories of Māori figures painted by the artist Gottfried Lindauer reveal a far more daring past. Across seven episodes, the personal stories of 21 tūpuna, are presented with startling honesty by their descendants, embellished with a wealth of historical photos and beautiful re-enactments of real events.
The stories are rich and full of drama. One woman swam a river with her baby on her back to avoid capture and certain death. Another beautiful young girl swept a charming Prince of Wales off his feet, and he simply had to have her.
The glue that holds this series together is in the hands of a Bohemian painter. From the Czech town Pilsen, made famous by beer, to the Vienna School of Fine Arts, the early life of Gottfried Lindauer is explored and beautifully told.
Whatever your sensibility, revealed within these unique histories are stories that will make their way into your imagination.
“We can’t conceptualize with 21st century eyes the commitment that those rangatira had for their people. They had true love. A love of their race a love of their people.”
David Rankin, Nga Puhi
